Rooms
The first cabin, built in 1998 from deodar the storms brought down, right where the forest starts. A double bed in the loft under the roof beams, a sitting corner by the bukhari below, and a window that is all trees. The stove heats the room and the kettle on top of it; we light it before you come back in the evening and bring the firewood. The shower runs hot from the geyser. The loft ladder is steep. If that does not suit you, the Orchard Cabin is all on one floor.
Bukhari stove · Loft bed · Forest view · Breakfast +2
Among the apple trees below the forest, all on one floor, with a porch that gets the first sun in the morning. A double bed, a bukhari and a small writing table. In September the trees outside the door are heavy with apples, and nobody minds if you pick one.
Bukhari stove · Porch · Orchard view · One floor +1
Two rooms and a sitting room with windows on three sides: a double bed in one room, two singles in the other, and the bukhari between them. The cabin nearest the kitchen, which matters with children at dinner time, and the one with the best view down the valley.

The hosts
We are Prem and Rekha, and Kalga is where we both grew up: the last village under the deodars before the forest takes over the hill. Prem's father built the first cabin from fallen deodar in 1998, the way houses here have always been built, and we added two more beside the orchard. Each one has a bukhari, a wood stove that heats the room and the water kettle on top of it. In the evening the smoke from the three chimneys hangs in the trees, the lamps come on, and that is the whole entertainment. There is signal, mostly. Most guests stop checking it on the second day.

Kalga, Parvati Valley, Himachal Pradesh
Jibhi is a forest village in the Banjar valley, all deodar cedar, wooden bridges and a stream that runs past most doorsteps. It has become the Himalayas' favourite slow-travel stop without losing the plot — there is a waterfall, a serpentine temple with astonishing woodwork at Chaini Kothi, and a great deal of walking. Nights are cold most of the year, which is exactly why the fire pit gets used.
The last kilometre to the treehouses is a walking path — we carry bags up, and there is parking at the road.
The old deodar forest between Kalga and Pulga, a level walk from our gate.
The hot spring at the top of the valley; six hours up from Barshaini.
A wooden village at the head of the valley, an hour by road and path.
Gurudwara and hot springs; langar runs all day.
